Monday Night Preview / Aaron Gorrell Broncos-bound?

August 25th 2008 06:09
Penrith vs. Melbourne at CUA Stadium
-Melbourne can all but wrap up the minor premiership at CUA Stadium tonight in what shapes as a danger game for the defending premiers. After successive victories over fellow heavyweights Manly and the Roosters, the Storm can ill afford to let complacency creep in against the enigmatic Panthers. The home side bounced back from their humiliating defeat at the hands of Canberra to trounce the Bulldogs 52-16 last weekend, and an upset against the Storm would see them re-enter the top-8. Penrith currently sit one competition point behind Newcastle, Parramatta and the Warriors, who share eighth place. The Panthers have ample attacking brilliance at their disposal and need to get off to a quick start to have any chance of staying with the ruthless Storm. A mouthwatering match-up awaits in the centres as young superstars and former schoolboy opponents Israel Folau and Michael Jennings face off - both flyers have 12 tries to their name in 2008 and are in irresistible form.

Aaron Gorrell in Broncos sights
- Former St. George-Illawarra hooker Aaron Gorrell is reportedly being scouted as a replacement for Bulldogs-bound No. 9 Michael Ennis at the Broncos. Currently with high-flying English Super League club Catalans, Gorrell is yet to take up the one-year option in his favour with the French outfit, potentially eyeing off a return to the NRL. The goalkicking rake was reluctant to leave St. George-Illawarra at the end of 2006, and in hindsight was unlucky to be squeezed out of the club given the mediocre contribution in 2007-08 of veteran hooker Simon Woolford, who was recruited from Canberra. Ennis has been arguably Brisbane's best player in 2008, and is looming as the most difficult to replace of the Broncos' swag of departing stars at the end of the season. PJ Marsh has been a major disappointment, while seemingly the only other viable option is promising utiliy Andrew McCullough. Gorrell broke Brisbane's hearts with a sideline conversion on fulltime at Suncorp in 2006 to snatch victory 18-16 for the Dragons, and his goalkicking would be an added bonus at Red Hill given that Ennis' departure leaves the club with only Corey Parker as a recognised kicker.
