Melbourne 40 d. Penrith 6
-The Storm put one hand on the minor premiership with a resounding win over the Panthers, whose finals hopes will now depend on winning their final two games and other results going their way. Steve Turner chipped in with two tries for the rampant premiers, while Greg Inglis put speculation about his future to one side and crossed for a hat-trick, taking his season tally to 15 from 16 games.
Greg Bird charged with assault
-Cronulla's tilt at a maiden premiership has received a potentially crippling blow with assault charges laid against star lock Greg Bird. The Sharks today issued a statement saying Bird will be stood down from playing indefinitely, and that it was highly unlikely he would play again this season. Bird, the incumbent Australian Test five-eighth, is alleged to have assaulted his girlfriend at his Cronulla apartment. He was granted bail after a court appearance today and is due back in court on October 8 - three days after the grand final. While it is a major blow to the Sharks, they will look to draw inspiration from the Canberra Raiders, who have become arguably the form team in the competition in the weeks following the sacking of star half Todd Carney.
